Michael Spyres
Michael Spyres is regarded worldwide as one of the outstanding singers in his field. Born in Mansfield, Missouri, he first studied in the United States and later at the Konservatorium der Stadt Wien.
The BariTenor first attracted international attention in 2008 as Otello (Otello by Rossini) at the Festival Rossini in Wildbad and as Tamino (Die Zauberflöte) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. His extensive repertoire ranges from the Baroque and Mozart to the 20th century. He initially made his name as a bel canto singer, a Mozart interpreter and in French roles. More recently, he has also established himself as one of the most sought-after exponents of the heroic repertoire.
In 2024, he made his Wagner debut as Lohengrin at the Opéra du Rhin, followed by his house and role debut as Siegmund in Die Walküre at the Bayreuth Festival. In 2025, he returned to Bayreuth for his role debut as Stolzing in the opening premiere of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, where he was also heard again as Siegmund. In March 2026, he made his role debut as Tristan in Tristan und Isolde in a new production at New York’s Metropolitan Opera.
Further engagements in the 2025/26 season included Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Spain, and Hoffmann in Les Contes d’Hoffmann at the Paris Opéra. On the concert platform, he appears at venues including the Vienna State Opera and the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, the Wiener Musikverein, Grafenegg, Valencia, Riga, Gstaad, Dijon and Lausanne.
Since 2015, Spyres has been Artistic Director of the opera company in his hometown, the Ozarks Lyric Opera, and has played a major role in its revival. In recent years he has realised numerous projects there, including 15 opera productions and five gala concerts.
At the Vienna State Opera, he made his debut in 2019 as Ramiro (La cenerentola) and has since sung Bacchus (Ariadne auf Naxos), Florestan (Fidelio) and the title role in Palestrina. In the coming weeks, he will appear here as Siegmund, Nemorino and the Singer (Der Rosenkavalier).
