The Education & Outreach Department offers cultural education programs for children, teens, and adults centered on opera and ballet—at the Vienna State Opera, at the NEST (New State Opera at the Künstlerhaus), and in Vienna’s districts. With NEST, the Vienna State Opera has a second venue and center of activity that places a special emphasis on children’sand youth productions, workshops, and experimental formats for people of all ages. Participatory projects create spaces where musical theater can be experienced together, discussed, and actively shaped together.
An internship in the Education & Outreach offers insights into music theater education practices that are tailored to specific target groupsat the Vienna State Opera, as well as insights into planning, operational, and rehearsal processes, specifically in the field of children’s and youth opera.
The scope of responsibilities includes:

Makeup Artists

Your Profile:
Completed apprenticeship as a makeup artist or hairstylist and wigmaker, or
Training as a certified makeup artist or certified makeup specialist
Experience in theater, film, or television is a plus
High level of technical skill and creativity
Ability to handle pressure and remain calm in stressful situations
Team spirit, a sense of responsibility, reliability, and a passion for collaborating with artists

For NEST—the new State Opera at the Künstlerhaus—we are looking for a
→ Prop and Set Design Staff Member
The position is a full-time, permanent position starting September 1, 2026.
With its national and international artists, the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, and the Vienna State Ballet, the Vienna State Opera is one of the world’s most prestigious opera houses. More than 900 employees make it possible to stage a repertoire of over 280 performances each season. In December 2024, the Vienna State Opera opened a second venue. In addition to musical theater for children and young people, this venue also hosts contemporary operas, ballet, and special events. Approximately 100 events per season are planned, in various formats.
Responsibilities:
- Assisting with planning and helping to set up and take down all types of events for the props and stage departments
- Collaborating on the development of the respective production
- Supporting performance and rehearsal operations
- Researching, creating, purchasing, maintaining, and inspecting props
- Collaborating and coordinating with the workshops, directing teams, and performers
- Maintenance, inventory management, storage, and timely transport of props
- Ensuring the safe use of special effects and the handling of weapons, in compliance with all safety and protective regulations
- Assisting with the implementation of touring productions and providing support for rentals and external events
Requirements:
- Vocational training in an artistic or craft-based field; training as an event technician, set designer, interior decorator, carpenter, metalworker, or mechatronics technician
- Training in pyrotechnics is a plus
- Manual dexterity and technical understanding, creativity, and a wealth of ideas

- Operating hydraulic and pneumatic systems in set pieces
- Screwing steel structures and stage elements to the floor and to raised set pieces
- Fabricating and repairing stage props

Ballet
We are seeking an experienced and committed individual to serve as Administrative Manager of the Ballet Academy of the Vienna State Opera, starting 15 November 2026, full-time.
Working in close partnership with the Academy Director, you will provide strategic leadership across the Academy's operations, finance, administration, people, partnerships, and organizational development. As a member of the senior leadership team, you will drive organizational excellence, support world-class ballet education, and foster an inclusive, high-performing culture for students, families, faculty, and staff. We are looking for an inspiring leader with outstanding business skills and acumen, and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in arts education, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Together with the Director of the Ballet Academy, you shape and implement the strategic vision, organizational development, governance framework and long-term growth.
- Lead the Academy's administration by implementing executive decisions, developing policies and procedures, and ensuring operational excellence across all administrative functions.
- Direct the planning and delivery of the Academy's annual academic programme, including curriculum planning, scheduling, faculty allocation, auditions, admissions, scholarships, and student participation in productions.
- Oversee the Academy's day-to-day operations across the Ballet Academy, Vienna State Opera, NEST, and Volksoper, ensuring seamless coordination, organizational effectiveness, and operational excellence.
- Build and strengthen strategic partnerships with educational, artistic, governmental, and community stakeholders, while representing the Academy and negotiating cooperation agreements.
- Lead the planning and delivery of Academy performances, events, guest performances, tours, and related production activities and budgets.
- Provide strategic oversight of the Academy's marketing and communications, including digital platforms, social media, website content, and promotional campaigns.
- Lead strategic financial and budget responsibility within the approved operating and investment budget, including budget planning according to the parameters of the Bundestheater Holding, controlling, procurement, contract management, compliance, and the efficient and sustainable use of the Academy’s resources.
- Lead and develop high-performing administrative and artistic teams, providing strategic oversight of workforce planning, performance management, HR administration, employee relations, and collaboration with the Works Council.
- Cultivate strategic partnerships and external funding opportunities while strengthening relationships with sponsors, donors, the Friends of the Vienna State Ballet, and other key supporters.
Foster an inclusive, safe, and supportive learning environment by overseeing student welfare, safeguarding, building safety, parent engagement, and collaboration with the Child Welfare Team.
Requirements
- At least seven years of leadership experience in a senior role in cultural, educational, or arts management, or in a comparable leadership position within a complex, education-related and mission-driven organization.
- Proven experience in strategic planning, organizational development, financial management, operational leadership, and continuous improvement.
- Successful leadership experience in building, developing, and supporting high-performing interdisciplinary teams, as well as in shaping a cooperative and inclusive organizational culture.
- Excellent communication, relationship-building, and stakeholder management skills, with experience working across public institutions, educational organisations, artistic partners, and culturally diverse communities.

Salary
The salary range for this position is €4.800–€5.300 gross per month (full-time / 14 times per year). The collective agreement minimum salary is €3,052.30 gross per month for full-time employment.
