The Education & Outreach Department is seeking two (music) theater or dance educators starting in October/November 2026; for 30 hours and 19 hours per week; duration: fixed-term for one year

The Education & Outreach Department offers cultural education programs for children, teens, and adults centered around opera and ballet—at the Vienna State Opera, at NEST (New State Opera at the Künstlerhaus), and throughout Vienna’s districts. With NEST, the Vienna State Opera has a second venue and center of activity that places a special emphasis on children’sand youth productions, workshops, and experimental formats for people of all ages. Participatory projects create spaces where musical theater can be experienced together, discussed, and actively shaped together.

Area of Responsibility:

• Con­cep­tualization, planning, and implementation of a wide range of educational programs for the Vienna State Opera, the Vienna State Ballet, and NEST (New State Opera)
• Leading or co-leading participatory outreach projects
• Production and organizational management for various outreach and play development projects
• Strategic and administrative collaboration with partners, educational institutions, and social partners
• Editorial work: Creating magazine articles, program booklets, promotional texts, and social media posts

• Strategic planning, curating, and helping to shape the program

Requirements:

• A completed degree or training in the fields of music theater education and/or dance education, dramaturgy, theater and music studies, instrumental and vocal pedagogy, Contemporary Arts Practice, or similar fields of study, with or without experience in the opera industry
• Professional experience in artisticeducational work with different age groups, focusing on participatory processes
• Strong interest in musical theater and dance, as well as in children’s and youth theater
• High level of reliability, a sense of responsibility, and initiative
• Good ability to set priorities, as well as strong time and schedule management skills
• A high level of social and communication skills, as well as the ability to treat people from diverse backgrounds with respectpeople
• Openness and sensitivity to diversity with regard to different backgrounds, perspectives, life realities, and needs in artistic-educational work
• Flexibility and a willingness to work occasionally in the evenings or on weekends

The salary range for this position is between €2,800–3,200 gross per month (full-time / 14 payments per year). The actual salary will be determined in a personal interview based on professional experience and qualifications. The minimum salary under the collective bargaining agreement is €2,590.74 gross per month based on full-time employment.

Makeup Artists

To strengthen our makeup department, we are currently looking for
→ Makeup Artists—on a temporary basis as part-time helpers

Responsibilities:

• Supporting our makeup team during rehearsals and performances

• Applying makeup for stage and television that is appropriate for the character and role, in accordance with artistic specifications
• Professional and role-appropriate hair styling and arrangement in accordance with artistic specifications
• Professional application, adjustment, removal, and cleaning of wigs, hairpieces, facial hair, as well as bald heads, partial baldness, prosthetic facial parts, wounds, etc.

Your Profile:

• Completed apprenticeship as a makeup artist or as a hairstylist and wigmaker, or

• Training as a certified makeup artist or certified makeup specialist

• Experience in theater, film, or television is a plus

• High level of technical skill and creativity

• Ability to handle pressure and remain calm in stressful situations

• Team spirit, a sense of responsibility, reliability, and a passion for collaborating with artists

• Willingness to work irregular hours (evenings, weekends, holidays)

• Very good command of German

Compensation is based on the 1999 Collective Bargaining Agreement for Technical Staff.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Supporting rehearsals and performances of musical theater productions
• Setting up and taking down stage sets for rehearsals and performances
• Carrying out set changes
• Maintaining and, if necessary, repairing set pieces

You possess the following qualities:

• A completed apprenticeship in a relevant skilled trade or comparable qualification

Your responsibilities will include:

• Operating all under-stage machinery, as well as turntables, special functional structures, and curtains in the stage portal during rehearsals and performances
• Maintaining and inspecting the stage technology equipment in the understage area
• Operating hydraulic and pneumatic systems in set pieces
• Bolting steel structures and stage elements to the floor and to raised set pieces
• Fabricating and repairing stage props
• Designing stage entrances: These enable the appearance and disappearance of people, props, and set pieces through the use of rising floors and stage lifts
• Implementation of stage effects such as stage fog, smoke, wind, foam, and water

You possess the following qualities:

• Manual dexterity and technical understanding
• A completed apprenticeship as a metalworker, metal technician, or sheet metal worker is a plus
• Workshop experience in a metalworking facility
• Experience working independently in a metalworking shop (cutting, drilling, bending, welding, etc.)

• High level of commitment

• Excellent physical condition and ability to handle stress

• Troubleshooting and responding quickly to technical challenges during performances
