Sakurako Jayne Abe
Born and raised in Hokkaido, Japan, Sakurako Jayne Abe is a Japanese-Canadian collaborative pianist whose career has taken her across the United States, Canada and Europe. With a particular passion for opera and vocal collaboration, she has worked as a pianist and coach alongside singers, conductors and instrumentalists in performances and educational settings.
After serving as a pianist and coach with the Merola Opera Program in the summer of 2026, she moved to Vienna. She is a pianist with the Opera Studio of the Vienna State Opera for the 2026–28 seasons. Her opera credits include Ariadne auf Naxos, for which she also played the piano part in the orchestra, La Tragédie de Carmen, Così fan tutte, L’elisir d’amore, An American Dream and The Crucible.
She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music, where she studied with Lisa Tahara. She then completed a Master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music, specializing in vocal collaboration under Thomas Lausmann.
Beyond opera, Abe has a deep appreciation for chamber music, art song and instrumental collaboration. She finds particular joy in the musical dialogue and shared interpretation at the heart of collaborative performance. In Vienna, she looks forward to expanding her repertoire, learning from artists and colleagues from around the world, and developing her artistry through Europe’s varied musical opportunities.
