Anja Mittermüller

Austrian mezzo-soprano Anja Mittermüller studied in Hanover. Since autumn 2026, she has continued her training at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Claudia Visca and Florian Boesch. She has attended masterclasses with Robert Holl, Brigitte Fassbaender, Sir András Schiff and Franz Welser-Möst, among others.

In 2024, she won first prize at the Wigmore Hall/Bollinger International Song Competition, becoming the youngest winner in the competition’s history. Further honours followed: she received the ICMA Young Artist Award 2026 and was selected by BBC Radio 3 for the next edition of its New Generation Artists scheme. She has been an Associate Artist of Wigmore Hall since autumn 2026 and will join the stARTacademy Bayer Kultur in 2027.

She appeared as the Dryad in Ariadne auf Naxos at the Salzburg Festival and as Tisbe in La Cenerentola at the Bregenz Festival. Other engagements have taken her to the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Musikverein in Vienna, Milan, Barcelona, the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, the :alpenarte festival in Schwarzenberg, the Schubertiade Dürnstein and the Heidelberger Frühling. She has performed with the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestra Sinfonica e Coro Sinfonico di Milano.

A highlight of her 2026/27 season is a performance of Bach’s St Matthew Passion with Concentus Musicus under Stefan Gottfried at the Musikverein in Vienna and the Brucknerhaus in Linz. She joins the Vienna State Opera’s Opera Studio in the 2026/27 season.
