Sonya Yoncheva
After studying voice in her native Plovdiv and in Geneva, Sonya Yoncheva began her career as a graduate of Le Jardin des Voix, initially focusing on Baroque repertoire.
She has appeared at numerous leading opera houses and festivals, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Opéra national de Paris, the Staatsoper Berlin, the Bavarian State Opera, Zurich Opera House, the Salzburg Festival, and the Arena di Verona. Her repertoire there has included the title roles in Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Fedora, Norma, Médée, La traviata, L’incoronazione di Poppea, and Iolanta, as well as Imogene (Il pirata), Maddalena (Andrea Chénier), Mimì (La Bohème), Elisabeth de Valois (Don Carlos), and Lisa (The Queen of Spades). She also appears regularly in concerts and recitals around the world.
In addition, Sonya Yoncheva is active as a producer. Following four solo albums for Sony Classical, she released the album The Courtesan through her company SY11, followed by George and ĪCŌN, as well as her book Fifteen Mirrors. In Sofia, she curates a concert series.
Sonya Yoncheva made her Vienna State Opera debut in 2013 and has sung the title roles in Iolanta, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly at the house, as well as Maddalena (Andrea Chénier), Marguerite (Faust), and Juliette (Roméo et Juliette).
