Kwangchul Youn
The Korean bass Kwangchul Youn is regarded as one of the leading singers of his fach worldwide, with Wagner and Verdi forming the artistic core of this exceptional bass.
In the 2025/26 season, he appears as Gurnemanz in Parsifal at the San Francisco Opera, as King Heinrich (Heinrich der Vogler) in Lohengrin at the Baden-Baden Festival (Germany), as Fiesco in Simon Boccanegra at the Vienna State Opera, and as Sarastro in The Magic Flute at the Los Angeles Opera.
For many years, he has performed at all major international opera houses, including Vienna, Berlin (Germany), London (United Kingdom), Milan (Italy), New York (USA), and Paris (France), as well as at the Salzburg and Bayreuth Festivals.
From 1993 to 2004, Kwangchul Youn was a member of the ensemble of the Berlin State Opera, where he developed many roles from his wide-ranging repertoire. In 2018, he was awarded the title of Kammersänger in Berlin.
In addition to his extensive operatic career, he is also a highly sought-after concert singer and has appeared with the world’s leading orchestras. Notably, he opened the 2019/20 season with the inaugural concert of Kirill Petrenko as chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic.
