Cornelius Meister
Cornelius Meister was General Music Director of the Staatsoper Stuttgart and the Staatsorchester Stuttgart from 2018 to 2026, Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra from 2010 to 2018, General Music Director of the Theater Heidelberg and Philharmonisches Orchester Heidelberg from 2005 to 2012, and Principal Guest Conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra Tokyo from 2017 to 2020.
Known for his broad repertoire, he has performed works by more than 250 composers – as a pianist from an early age and, since 1997, also as a conductor. He studied piano, cello, horn, harpsichord, organ, fortepiano and conducting in Hanover and Salzburg. At the age of 21, he made his debut at the Staatsoper Hamburg with Pollicino, followed by his debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper at the age of 24.
He has conducted at the Vienna State Opera since 2012, at La Scala in Milan since 2015 and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York since 2019; in 2022, he made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival. His distinctions include a Gramophone Award, the OPUS Klassik as Conductor of the Year, an International Classical Music Award, the Diapason d’Or and the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. Under his direction, the Staatsorchester Stuttgart received the Innovationspreis der Deutschen Orchester-Stiftung in 2020.
