The Vienna State Opera mourns the loss of the great South African soprano Mimi Coertse, who died in Pretoria on April 27, 2026. The Austrian Kammersängerin was 93 years old.
Mimi Coertse performed around 500 evenings at the Haus am Ring - including as an ensemble singer at the Vienna State Opera - where she made her debut in 1956 as the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte. Another Mozart role became her most sung state opera role: Konstanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, which she sang here 102 times and with which she also set international standards. Her 28 roles at the Haus am Ring also include Fiakermilli(Arabella), Zerbinetta(Ariadne auf Naxos), Fiordiligi(Così fan tutte), Daphne, Donna Anna and Donna Elvira(Don Giovanni), Violetta Valéry(La traviata), Nedda(Pagliacci), Gilda(Rigoletto) and the four female roles in Les Contes d'Hoffmann. her last appearance on the State Opera stage was in 1978 as Elisabetta(Don Carlo).
