Since the 2007/08 season, Matthäus Schmidlechner has been a member of the soloist ensemble of the Landestheater Linz, where he has introduced himself to audiences in numerous distinctive major roles as an expressive, versatile and theatrically engaging singer.

Alongside his commitments in Linz, in the 2020/21 season Matthäus Schmidlechner appeared at La Scala in Milan in a new production of Salome, in Mahagonny-Songspiel, in Kurt Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins, and once again at the Salzburg Festival.

Matthäus Schmidlechner has worked with directors such as Olivier Tambosi, Romeo Castellucci, Damiano Michieletto, Uwe Eric Laufenberg and Anthony Pilavachi, as well as with distinguished conductors including Franz Welser-Möst, Riccardo Chailly, Dennis Russell Davies and Markus Poschner.

Alongside music theatre, the concert repertoire forms a further artistic focus of his work. His repertoire includes, among other works, Bach’s Passions and Haydn’s oratorios, Handel’s Messiah, Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Anton Bruckner’s Te Deum.

He received his first vocal training at the Salzburg music school system. He completed his studies at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz with William Mason, Thomas Kerbl and Kurt Azesberger in 2009, graduating with distinction. For his final concert in the Lied and Oratorio programme, he performed Ernst Křenek’s song cycle Reisebuch aus den österreichischen Alpen, which awakened his interest in song repertoire. This cycle was recorded in an orchestral version with Matthäus Schmidlechner as soloist and released on CD. In masterclasses and workshops, he has also worked with Michael Schade, Felicity Lott, Barbara Bonney, Gerhard Kahry and Arthur Korn.
