Matthäus Schmidlechner
Since September 2024, the Salzburg-born tenor has been a member of the Vienna State Opera ensemble, where he made his acclaimed debut as Mime (Der Ring des Nibelungen) in 2023. Since then, he has appeared at the Vienna State Opera in roles such as Herod (Salome), Monostatos (Die Zauberflöte), Goro (Madama Butterfly), Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus), and Hauk-Šendorf (Věc Makropulos). In May 2026, he also made a highly successful role debut as Loge (Das Rheingold). During the 2026/27 season, he is scheduled to appear as Vašek (The Bartered Bride), Pedrillo (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Prince, Marquis and Valet (Lulu), Valzacchi (Der Rosenkavalier), and Scaramuccio (Ariadne auf Naxos), among other roles.
After studying at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz with William Mason, Thomas Kerbl, and Kurt Azesberger, he was a member of the ensemble of the Landestheater Linz from 2007 to 2024. There, he performed numerous major roles within his Fach and won acclaim as an expressive and versatile singer and actor.
Guest engagements have taken him to the Opéra national de Paris, La Scala in Milan, the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, and repeatedly to the Salzburg Festival.
In addition to his operatic performances, Matthäus Schmidlechner is also a regular presence on the concert stage. His repertoire includes, among other works, Bach’s Passions, Haydn’s oratorios, Handel’s Messiah, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and Bruckner’s Te Deum.
