Lorenzo Viotti
Lorenzo Viotti, born in Switzerland in 1990, is one of the most compelling young musicians of his generation and currently serves as Principal Guest Conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, following four seasons as Music Director of Dutch National Opera. His tenure in Amsterdam from 2021 to 2025 was marked by critically acclaimed new productions, including Britten’s Peter Grimes and a three-part Puccini cycle.
Admired for his charismatic stage presence, emotional depth and remarkable versatility in both the symphonic and operatic repertoire, Viotti also appeared at many major venues during the 2025/26 season. He continues his successful collaborations with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, and made his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
In 2026, Lorenzo Viotti was appointed Music Director of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, twelve years after his sensational debut with the ensemble in 2014. In addition, Opernhaus Zürich, where he appears regularly as a conductor, named him its next General Music Director beginning in 2028. In recent years, he has delighted Zurich audiences with productions of Die Csárdásfürstin (2020), Werther (2018), Die tote Stadt and Die Fledermaus (2025).
Through the continued expansion of his operatic repertoire, he has conducted at many of Europe’s leading opera houses and beyond, including Dutch National Opera, where he made his debut in 2019 with Cavalleria rusticana, La Scala in Milan with Simon Boccanegra, New National Theatre Tokyo with Tosca, Opéra de Paris with Faust, Stuttgart Opera with Rigoletto, and the Vienna State Opera with Von der Liebe Tod.
A highly sought-after guest conductor in the symphonic field, Lorenzo Viotti has also collaborated with numerous renowned orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, The Cleveland Orchestra and the Munich Philharmonic.
Lorenzo Viotti grew up in a French-Italian family of musicians and studied piano, voice and percussion in Lyon before continuing his conducting studies with Georg Mark in Vienna and Nicolás Pasquet in Weimar. During his years in Vienna, he remained active as a percussionist with several distinguished ensembles and orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic.
After winning a number of conducting competitions, including the Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award in 2015, he emerged on the international stage at the age of just 25. Since then, Viotti has gained worldwide recognition in both the orchestral and operatic worlds. In 2017, he was named “Newcomer of the Year” by the International Opera Awards, and in 2018 he took up his first permanent appointment as Music Director of the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon.
