Ersan Mondtag
Ersan Mondtag works as a director, set and costume designer, and visual artist. His work moves between theatre, opera, visual art, and performance, and has been presented internationally at theatres, opera houses, and art institutions.
Invitations have taken him, among others, to the Berliner Ensemble, the Münchner Kammerspiele, the MMK Frankfurt, the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Schauspiel Köln, Thalia Theater Hamburg, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Schauspiel Gent, Staatsoper Hannover, Opéra de Lyon, and the Burgtheater Wien. Most recently, his works have been seen at NTGent, Oper Antwerpen, and in Lorraine, France, Kraków, Istanbul, Rome, Belgrade, and Venice.
Mondtag has staged both classics and contemporary works. His productions include Die Orestie at Thalia Theater Hamburg, Der Freischütz at Staatsoper Kassel, and Antikrist at Deutsche Oper Berlin, as well as Elfriede Jelinek’s Wut at Schauspiel Köln, Wonderland Avenue at Schauspiel Köln, Sybille Berg’s Hass-Triptychon at the Wiener Festwochen and Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin, Thomas Jonigk’s Phaedra at Schauspiel Köln, and Olga Bach’s Das Erbe at the Münchner Kammerspiele. His original devised works Tyrannis at Staatstheater Kassel, Das Internat at Schauspiel Dortmund, and Die Vernichtung at Theater Bern were invited to the Berliner Theatertreffen.
At the 2023 Berlinale, Mondtag made his debut as the director of a “theatre within film”: for Robert Schwentke’s film Seneca, he created the Seneca play Thyestes, featuring Samuel Finzi, Louis Hofmann, and John Malkovich. In 2024, together with multimedia artist Yael Bartana, he designed the German contribution to the Pavilion of the Federal Republic of Germany at the 60th Venice Art Biennale.
Mondtag has received numerous awards, both for his directing and for his set and costume designs. In 2016, the critics’ poll of Theater heute named him Emerging Director of the Year, Emerging Set Designer of the Year, and Costume Designer of the Year for Tyrannis. In 2017, he was named Set and Costume Designer of the Year for Die Vernichtung; in 2019, he received the 3sat Prize for Das Internat. More recent distinctions include the Oper! Award for Best Set Designer for Der Schmied von Gent, his selection as Set Designer of the Year 2022 in the critics’ poll of Die Deutsche Bühne, and the prize for Best European Opera Production at the French Critics’ Awards for Der Silbersee.
Mondtag’s work combines a distinctive visual signature with an interest in social, psychological, and political structures. His stage spaces are not mere settings, but concentrated spaces of thought and perception: they render power relations visible, interrogate the mechanisms of language, rationality, and violence, and from them develop a theatrical sensuality all their own, often overwhelming in its force. His intensive engagement with opera thus appears as the logical extension of an artistic approach in which music, space, body, and image are inseparably intertwined.
