Ermanno Florio
Conductor Ermanno Florio has impressed both audiences and critics in the major centres of Europe, North America and Asia. A symphonic conductor with a deep understanding of the art of ballet, his career spans more than forty years, during which time he has served as music director of some of the world's most prestigious ballet companies, including the American Ballet Theatre, the Netherlands National Ballet, the Houston Ballet and the National Ballet of Canada. With an unwavering commitment to music for dance, he has established an international career as a leading figure in the field of ballet conducting.
He has led performances with ballet companies at many of the world’s most prestigious opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera House, Paris Opera, Vienna State Opera, Berlin State Opera, Teatro alla Scala, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and the New National Theatre in Tokyo. He has also appeared with many other renowned international ballet companies, including the New York City Ballet, the Swedish Royal Ballet, the Norwegian National Ballet, the Finnish National Ballet and the Ballet of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma.
His extensive discography includes the award-winning performances of Don Quichotte with the orchestra of the Paris Opera which won the Cannes Classical Music Award for the Best DVD in the category of Concert and Ballet Recordings and Le Corsaire with the American Ballet Theatre which won an EMMY for Outstanding Classical Programme in the Performing Arts. Other recordings include La Sylphide with the Paris Opera Ballet, The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Giselle and Cinderella with the Dutch National Ballet as well as Onegin, The Merry Widow, Alice, La Ronde with the National Ballet of Canada.
He has arranged music for Patrice Bart’s Tchaikovsky for the Finnish National Ballet, Das Flammende Herz for the Staatsballett Berlin, Gustaf III for the Royal Swedish Ballet and Empress Elizabeth of Austria – Sissi for the Croatian National Ballet, Stanton Welch’s Marie Antoinette and La Bayadère for the Houston Ballet, Christopher Wheeldonʼs Cinderella for the Dutch National Ballet, Robert de Warren’s A Midsummer Nightʼs Dream for the Teatro alla Scala Ballet and Asami Maki’s La Dame aux Camélias for the New National Theatre Ballet in Tokyo.
At Vienna State Opera, Ermanno Florio has conducted the ballets Don Quixote, Manon and the Nureyev Gala 2012.
