Werner Van Mechelen

The versatile, award-winning Belgian bass-baritone Werner Van Mechelen ranks among the leading international singers of his field, both on the opera stage and the concert platform.

His upcoming engagements include Klingsor at the Vienna State Opera and at the Vienna Festival, Alberich (Götterdämmerung) at the Saarländisches Staatstheater in Saarbrücken (Germany), and Capulet (Roméo et Juliette) at La Monnaie in Brussels.

Alongside his operatic career, Werner Van Mechelen is also highly active as a recitalist and oratorio singer. In addition to Schubert’s Winterreise, his schedule features several thematically curated recital programmes such as “Hymne an die Mutter” and “An die ferne Geliebte.” In the concert repertoire, he performs works including Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Elijah and Puccini’s Messa di gloria. He will also appear as a conductor in performances of Handel’s Messiah.

Furthermore, he serves as director of the concert series ZEE-renades in De Haan (Belgium) on the Belgian North Sea coast. His discography likewise reflects the wide range of his artistry and includes CDs and DVDs featuring lieder, oratorio, and opera repertoire.
