Opera and Ballet for Schools
Making opera and ballet accessible to young people - creatively, at eye level and with room for individual approaches.
Arouse curiosity, encourage enthusiasm and create spaces in which pupils can actively experience music theater and dance - in the auditorium as well as in the classroom.
Performances
As a school class, it is possible to attend performances of our repertoire, dress rehearsals of current new productions and stage rehearsals at a reduced school group price.
A visit to a performance can also be combined with one of our free workshops, subject to registration.

Workshops
What is special about an opera production? What characterizes the movement language of a choreography? In preparatory or follow-up school workshops, pupils creatively explore the plot, themes, music or dance aesthetics of an opera or ballet.
They get to know the work in question even better by learning how to act, making music together and improvising. The theater pedagogical workshops can be flexibly adapted to the level of knowledge of the school class in consultation with the teacher.
A workshop can be booked free of charge in connection with the booking of a performance and lasts 90 minutes. It takes place at the respective school.
Dates for school workshops can be arranged flexibly. Please contact outreach@wiener-staatsoper.at
Spotlight Classes
Three school classes discover opera not just as an audience, but as co-creators. They accompany a production at NEST (Neue Staatsoper), get to know the Vienna State Opera, experience rehearsal processes, talk to artists and take a look behind the scenes.
At the same time, they get creative themselves: over the course of the school year, they develop their own stage play, which celebrates its premiere in a joint show on the NEST stage.
The dates are set in close consultation with the teacher and adapted to the wishes and framework conditions of your school.
No special prior knowledge is required. The specific scope of the project depends on the time available and the interests of your pupils. The prerequisite for participation is that regular workshops can be organized at your school.
The offer is free of charge. You are welcome to submit a non-binding application using the form. Registration is possible until April 30, 2026.
For Teachers
The exchange with teachers and educators is particularly important to us. That's why we regularly offer networking events.
Visits to performances or rehearsals, music theater pedagogical workshops and informative exchanges are all part of the program. The aim is to work together to find ways in which music theater and dance can be taught in a lively and sustainable way in a school context.
