Yves Abel
Yves Abel is a regular guest on the podium of many of the world’s leading orchestras and at the foremost opera houses. He has appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, La Scala in Milan, the Opéra National in Paris, the Liceu in Barcelona, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the San Francisco Opera, the Vienna State Opera and the Bavarian State Opera, among many others.
Since the 2020/21 season he has served as Music Director of San Diego Opera; from 2015 to 2020 he was Chief Conductor of the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie in Herford and from 2005 to 2011 Principal Guest Conductor at Deutsche Oper Berlin. In 2017 he was honoured with the Rubies Award of Opera Canada in recognition of his outstanding services to opera in Canada.
A French-Canadian, he has a particular affinity for the French repertoire and was highly praised by critics for his achievements as founder and Music Director of L'Opéra Francais de New York, through which he has rediscovered lesser-known French operas. In 2009 he was awarded the title Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government for this work.
His recordings include Thaïs (with Renée Fleming), Werther, Madama Butterfly with the Philharmonia Orchestra, collections of French arias and Romantique, an album of Romantic arias with Elīna Garanča.
Highlights of the 2025/26 season include Carmen at the Vienna State Opera, La Fille du régiment at the Royal Ballet & Opera in London, Dialogues des carmélites at the Teatro Regio in Turin, Il barbiere di Siviglia and Pagliacci in San Diego, Roméo et Juliette at the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, Turandot at the Savonlinna Opera Festival and a concert performance of La Damnation de Faust at Opernhaus Zürich.
