Anita Monserrat
British mezzo-soprano Anita Monserrat is in her second season of the Studio of the Vienna State Opera as the Hildegard Zadek Foundation Scholarship holder.
Prior to joining the Studio, Anita studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw) with KS Michael Schade and Laura Aikin. Whilst at the mdw, Anita’s roles included Hänsel in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, and the principal role in Poulenc’s La Voix Humaine.
Anita was a member of the Young Singer’s Project at the 2023 Salzburger Festspiele, performing in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges, and attended the 2024 International Meistersinger Akademie (IMA). She was a semifinalist at the 30th edition of Plácido Domingo’s Operalia Competition in 2023 and won 1st prize at the 2024 SWR Junge Opernstars competition and 2nd prize at the Neue Stimmen 2024 competition.
In the UK, Anita has appeared as soloist in Bach’s St John Passion at London’s Barbican Centre with Britten Sinfonia, Bach’s St Matthew Passion and Handel’s Messiah with the London Handel Festival, and the St John Passion with Philippe Herreweghe. She has participated in many public masterclasses with artists such as KS Neil Shicoff, Malcolm Martineau and Mary Bevan.
Anita recently appeared as a soloist at the inaugural Vienna State Opera OpernAir Gala and made her debut at the Internationale Barocktage Stift Melk alongside Stefan Gottfriend and Concentus Musicus Wien. Other concert highlights include soloist at Christmas in Vienna at the Wiener Konzerthaus and in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Hans Graf. Her upcoming highlights include concert debuts at the Wiener Musikverein and Carnegie Hall, and Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro at Oper Köln.
At the Vienna State Opera, she sang roles as Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Lola in Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana and Kate Pinkerton in Puccini's Madama Butterfly, 1st Squire in Parsifal, Gertrude in Roméo et Juliette, and DU in the children's opera Sagt der Walfisch zum Thunfisch im NEST.
